Kansas City Chiefs draft prospect profile: Deionte Thompson, Alabama safety
By Thomas Welte
Weaknesses
Technique
Deionte Thompson has all of the ability in the world, but he seems to have mental hiccups from time to time. He does not always take the right angle, can get baited by a quarterback and sometimes freezes on his reads. He tends to try to run through blockers, instead of using leverage and his athleticism to get around and off the blocks. These are all coachable elements that Thompson is already improving on from year to year.
Tackling
This may be a product of Thompson’s athleticism than anything else. He over pursues and can find himself out of position on some tackles. Other times, he hits too high. This does not worry me too much as he is in position and usually makes enough contact to slow the ball carrier down, but at the pro level he will have to be more dependable.
Raw
Thompson is a member of an always stacked Alabama defense, so this is his first year in a full time starting role. He saw action as a rotational player and on special teams in years prior. There is still a lot of room for Thompson to grow, which is a good thing, but in terms of what a team is getting out of the box in April, well, they can expect some growing pains.
