Offensive Disappointment: Travis Kelce

In a surprising turn of events, one the Chiefs’ best offensive players just was not able to garner the type of production that is expected out of him. A huge disappointment, both in terms of fantasy football and on the actual field.

Travis Kelce just couldn’t get in rhythm with the on-fire Patrick Mahomes. Kelce had just one reception on seven targets, a disappointing start to the regular season for the star tight end. Hopefully, Kelce will be able to get his head in the game as the Chiefs take on the Steelers in Pittsburgh in Week 2.

Defensive Disappointment: Orlando Scandrick

I’m not certain you could consider this player a disappointment. The Chiefs knew heading into the regular season that signing this veteran defensive back was a gamble. It would either pay off, or it would come back to bite them. Unfortunately for the Chiefs, it appears to be the latter.

Orlando Scandrick was consistently burnt by the Chargers’ wide receivers. He looked bad both on the field and on paper. More is expected out of a veteran cornerback that made the Chiefs’ initial roster to start the season. It’s possible he could soon be out of a starting job with this performance if he isn’t able to produce as he should. This raises even more questions for the Chiefs’ struggling secondary.

The Wrap

There were some spectacular plays by the Chiefs offense. There were also some not-so-great plays, especially by top guys like Travis Kelce. A disappointing performance for Kelce definitely wasn’t expected, but it looks like he’ll have to figure things out as the team moves forward. Six yards and just one reception for your star tight end is embarrassing. Week 2 against the Steelers will be no easy feat, so Kelce will need to get his head in the game and step his game up.

Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill were just on fire all game. Although Mahomes had a completion rate of just 55.5%, he managed to tack on 4 passing touchdowns and 21 rushing yards. Only three Chiefs quarterbacks have thrown for 4 touchdowns in a season opener, being Len Dawson and Alex Smith. A spectacular performance by Tyreek Hill helped the Chiefs beat the Chargers, after gathering 268 all-purpose yards with 3 total touchdowns. If the Chiefs can continue to dominate offensively, fans of the team are in for a great season.

Sammy Watkins had 3 receptions for 21 yards. This performance was very disappointing for a $16m/year wide receiver. Hopefully, he’s able to produce more for the team, but his performance in Week 1 was lackluster. Definitely not showing his worth as being one of the top paid wide receivers in the NFL.

The Chiefs’ defensive woes continued, giving up 424 passing yards against the Chargers. There were some standout players on defense, though, with names like Ron Parker, Anthony Hitchens, and Dee Ford. Kendall Fuller also showed some decent production, hence the defensive player on the rise honors. Veterans like Orlando Scandrick and Justin Houston were disappointing, to say the least. Houston had only one solo tackle, making for a disheartening performance by the Chiefs’ star pass rusher. Houston needs to generate more production next week against the Steelers if he wants to remain an elite pass rusher.
