The Kansas City Chiefs were without Eric Berry in practice on Sunday as the star safety sat with a sore heel.

It didn’t take long for Kansas City Chiefs fans to sound the alarm on Sunday morning when they learned that Eric Berry was missing from practice and it wasn’t just to rest the star safety. Instead, the veteran missed Sunday’s practice at training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri due to a sore heel.

The idea of a secondary once again without Eric Berry would be enough for some fans to revolt before the season even starts. The position is already thin as it is given that the team released multi-year starter Ron Parker at free safety, and then came Daniel Sorensen’s injury of a broken tibia and torn MCL which will keep him out at least 6 weeks and potentially much longer. The Chiefs also didn’t exactly load up in the offseason with new additions, bringing in special teams ace Robert Golden and drafting Armani Watts in the fourth round.

This puts additional pressure on a yet unproven group of Eric Murray and Leon McQuay. Perhaps a versatile defensive back could step in a la Jordan Sterns, and it’s possible that hybrid linebacker Dorian O’Daniel could learn some aspects of Berry’s game if a worst-case scenario played out. But it’s quite clear that there’s only limited band-aids to go around if something happens to Berry once again.

Berry is the anchor to the Chiefs defense, a vocal leader and dynamic performer that the team is counting on to return to form. He’s among the highest paid at his position for a reason and the Chiefs can gamble in other places knowing he’s there to cover a multitude of angles when he’s at his best.

Hopefully Andy Reid will have further details when he addresses reporters at training camp and that those details will be positive. For now, we’re left wondering whether the sore heel is related to any of his previous injuries and whether this could an ongoing problem that plagues him for some time.
