Robert Golden, safety

Every year during John Dorsey’s tenure, it seemed there was a new veteran safety brought in off of the scrap heap, as they say, who would go on to outperform any expectations set out for them. From Kurt Coleman to Tyvon Branch to Kelcie McCray to Husain Abdullah, the Chiefs never had any problems finding quality depth and even legitimate playmakers at safety.

Now Brett Veach hopes he can continue the, uh, legacy given to him by Dorsey with the addition of Robert Golden. The former Pittsburgh Steelers safety is a hard worker and gritty performer who has great instincts and served as the Steelers special teams captain last season. He began his career as an undrafted free agent and managed to spend six full seasons in the Steel City—even starting a handful of games each year over the last three seasons.

Golden isn’t going to challenge for any starting role for the Chiefs, but he does add another standout performer for Dave Toub’s special teams units as well as a player who can sub in a pinch.
