The Kansas City Chiefs officially waived running back Akeem Hunt from the Physically Unable to Perform list on Wednesday.

Akeem Hunt’s tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs has officially come to a close, although we wouldn’t fault you if you already thought his time was over.

Hunt joined the Chiefs in 2017 as a member of the practice squad in early September after Spencer Ware was ruled out for the year. He joined the active roster a week later and remained there for the rest of the year. He played in 15 games, mostly on special teams as a returner, although he did finish the year with 8 carries for 23 total rushing yards and 4 catches for another 31 yards.

Hunt returned 25 kicks for the Chiefs in 2017 for 611 total yards, but the Chiefs clearly wanted to move in another direction this year as they brought in Kerwynn Williams from the Arizona Cardinals to join the competition with De’Anthony Thomas and perhaps even Tyreek Hill. In addition, wide receiver Jehu Chesson and running back Charcandrick West both returned multiple kicks in 2017 and remain on the roster.

Hunt was waived by the Chiefs in early May and went unclaimed, so the Chiefs were able to place him on the Physically Unable to Perform list given the fact that he’d injured his ankle to end the season. However Brett Veach apparently changed his mind about keeping Hunt around even on the PUP list as he waived him again on Wednesday after reaching an undisclosed injury settlement. This should end Hunt’s tenure with the Chiefs for good.

Hunt, who is still only 25-years-old, should be able to find meaningful work with his speed and special teams experience if he can prove he’s healthy. He played for the Houston Texans for the two seasons before joining the Chiefs, playing a total of 15 games.
