Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes says he can throw the football 85 yards and makes NFL Twitter go insane.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a new starting quarterback in Patrick Mahomes and the hype is building with each week of the offseason. His cannon of an arm, his natural ability to make mind-boggling plays, even his perfect demeanor despite his talent is all part of a QB package that has Chiefs fans excited and the NFL buzzing.

Mahomes recently appeared on Good Morning Football on the NFL Network for a long interview that’s worth watching in its entirety. He discusses listening to his own hype, the addition of Sammy Watkins, taking over this season at quarterback and more. However at the very end, one of NFL Network’s hosts Peter Schrager asks Mahomes how far he can throw a football.

Mahomes responds, “I say 85 yards.”

From there, everyone goes insane while they laugh and freak out, which is pretty much how everyone is responding, fair or not, to Mahomes this offseason. And if the Chiefs second-year starter was keen on downplaying the momentum of such buzz, he didn’t help matters by adding the 85-yard anecdote.

Throwing 85 yards almost sounds silly, like the NFL Network interviewed Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite who could throw a football “over them mountains.” Yet if you’ve watched Mahomes at all, you realized he’s completely telling the truth and that his incredible arm strength could likely do exactly what he just said.

If that’s the case, maybe it’s not so surprising that the Chiefs are doing anything and everything in their power to open up the offense for Mahomes this coming year and beyond. They signed Sammy Watkins to go with Tyreek Hill as wideouts for a 1 and 1A approach. They also have All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce and receivers like, Chris Conley and DeMarcus Robinson ready to  contribute in the passing game.

Even more, Kareem Hunt is a dynamic two-way target out of the backfield. Then again, the Chiefs also added Damien Williams as another pass catching running back who can compete for third down possibilities or help mix in to create mismatches depending on how the defense comes out.

If Mahomes can throw 85 yards, then a Hail Mary pass becomes something else entirely and the deep ball is always an option. It will be fun to see just how far he can throw during an official game this coming season, and how much the Chiefs offense will be stretching defenses for years to come.
