Wide Receivers

This group is a little different than the others because you have two stone cold roster locks (Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins), four roster favorites (Chris Conley, Demarcus Robinson, Jehu Chesson, and De’Anthony Thomas), and then a lot of the roster’s long shots. Here’s how the numbers look.

Tyreek Hill

Age: 24
Last year under contract: 2019
Post June 1? $687K saved

Sammy Watkins

Age: 24
Last year under contract: 2020
Post June 1? $8.2M cap HIT if cut

Chris Conley

Age: 25
Last year under contract: 2018
Post June 1? $1.9M saved

DeMarcus Robinson

Age: 23
Last year under contract: 2019
Post June 1? $639K saved

Jehu Chesson

Age: 24
Last year under contract: 2020
Post June 1? $564K saved

De’Anthony Thomas

Age: 25
Last year under contract: 2018
Post June 1? $630K saved

Here are the other wide receivers on the roster whose contracts are not current factoring into the salary cap (along with their ages):

  • Daniel Braverman, 24
  • Gehrig Dieter, 25
  • Davon Grayson, 22
  • Marcus Kemp, 22
  • Elijah Marks, 23
  • Byron Pringle, 24

I think if you were taking odds right now on the six wide receivers most likely to make the roster, the top six listed above would be the clear favorites. However, if one of the players from the bottom group were to stand out in camp, I don’t think any of the four guys in the middle tier are untouchable.

While I’m hopeful that Conley can bounce back after his injury, his cap number and the fact that his contract is up after this season could make him a possible surprise cut if enough of the young guys step up. I also think De’Anthony Thomas could be unseated by a stand out young receiver since the Chiefs only gave him a one year deal in free agency this offseason.

Now let’s look at the tight ends.
