Will the recently announced one-game suspension of Demetrius Harris affect the tight end’s final roster spot with the Kansas City Chiefs?

The NFL recently announced a one-game suspension for Kansas City Chiefs tight end Demetrius Harris. It’s a punishment levied due to an arrest from nearly 15 months ago on felony possession of marijuana charges.

Missing a single game, even due to a suspension, normally wouldn’t affect starting players, but backups like Harris are always facing incredible competition for reps. This year, the Chiefs have brought in fresh competition for the tight end slots behind Travis Kelce, including veterans Tim Wright and Jace Amaro. It’s another year, another slate of competitors for Harris, who has done well to stave off such hopefuls year after year.

However, now Harris has another issue to contend with. As they say, the best ability is availability and for one game, Harris simply doesn’t have it. Being out for the first game will force the Chiefs to be creative with the active roster to open the season, a bit of roster gymnastics that general manager Brett Veach might not appreciate.

The Chiefs have some serious decisions to make for at least one spot among the tight ends, but now Amaro, Wright and others—including the newly acquired Alex Ellis and UDFA Blake Mack—should feel good about their chances now that Harris has another blemish on his resume. If the Chiefs see a couple standout preseason performances from any of the previously mentioned options, they will have the chance to keep multiple players.

Then again, Harris has proven several times over his ability to overcome the hurdles in front of him. This suspension might just be the latest.
