The Chiefs work at cornerback called a “patchwork job”
By Matt Conner
One NFL columnist says the Chiefs have done a “patchwork job” at cornerback this offseason, and if that holds true, it could be a long year.
Gary Davenport is concerned about the cornerback position. He’s right in line with most everyone else in Chiefs Kingdom.
The Kansas City Chiefs already needed significant help in the secondary coming into this offseason, due to the fact that every single option to lock down the starting position opposite Marcus Peters failed to work out. Then the Chiefs went on to trade Peters himself.
Peters’ exit from K.C. is just one in a long line of leavers, a list that includes short-lived a la Darrelle Revis and the long-term a la Ron Parker. Without Peters, the Chiefs cupboard sounds incredibly bare, with only Steven Nelson returning as a proven performer.

In the face of such a void, Brett Veach went to work immediately, picking up Kendall Fuller from Washington in the Alex Smith trade. He then signed David Amerson before the free agency period began after his release from the Oakland Raiders. Just like that, the Chiefs at least added a couple new faces, but after the Peters trade, which came later, only Tremon Smith has been added, a sixth round choice in this year’s draft.
All of this is why Davenport, a columnist with Bleacher Report, believes the team’s efforts to this point are troubling if they plan to rest on their laurels. After Nelson, Amerson and Fuller, it’s a long list of hopefuls with no real proven base. Maybe they see something in Keith Reaser. Perhaps they can be the team to channel Will Redmond’s potential. And if you know these two names, then you’re already deep in the roster weeds.
Last year the Chiefs had a list of unproven characters who failed to work out as expected. If the Chiefs are hoping for different results this time around with another cast of unknowns, it could be another long year in the secondary.
