BJ Hill – DT – NC State

Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 311 pounds
40 time: 4.99 seconds
Bench Press: 35 reps (T-3rd amongst DL)
3 Cone Drill: 7.28 seconds (T-5th fastest DL, 1st for guys over 300 pounds)

There were a lot of defensive tackles that had good combines that I would be just fine seeing in a Chiefs’ uniform. That list would include Washington’s Vita Vea, Stanford’s Harrison Phillips, Fort Hays State’s Nathan Shepherd, South Florida’s Deadrin Senat, and Alabama defensive linemen Da’Ron Payne and Da’Shawn Hand. Some of those players will be off the board by the time the Chiefs pick, and others were very strong considerations for the defensive tackle spot on this list. However, this spot ultimately went to NC State’s BJ Hill.

In the end Hill’s combine was incredibly well rounded with a 40-yard dash time just under five seconds at 311 pounds, 35 reps on the bench press, and a fantastic three cone drill time. Once again, this backed up what you see on tape with Hill. He’s strong, fast, and athletic enough to produce in the NFL. While there are definitely times where Hill was taken out of plays by double teams or because he rushed himself out of position, the tools are all there and I felt like his effort was always good. The thing I really like about Hill is that I believe he has the upside to be a good three down defensive tackle with the strength to stop the run and the speed/agility to provide pressure up the middle. Here’s an example of Hill’s inside moves.

Like I said before, there are several talented big men to choose from in this draft, but if the Chiefs decided to go with BJ Hill I would be thrilled. I’d be fine with him as early as the second round and think he’s be a fantastic pick in the third round if he’s still on the board.

Now let’s look for a little secondary help.
