Lorenzo Carter, OLB, Georgia

What I love: Carter has actually jumped up my rankings recently. Lorenzo Carter is a near polar opposite of Sam Hubbard. Carter is an athletic freak at 6’5, 250 pounds. He has all of the athletic potential in the world, but has failed to put it all together. Carter played a variety of roles, and often times found himself as an off ball linebacker. I was surprised to see him read and react well when dropping into zone. He uses his length extremely well. I saw a high motor and a lot of hustle, chasing down plays from behind. Carter showed functional strength and I was surprised at his use of a bull rush, even over some bigger guards. Carter has a ton of upside, and I believe his best football is ahead of him.

What needs improvement: The one thing everyone wants to see from Carter is the athleticism to bend around the edge, many believe it’s there but it has not been shown on tape. Hand usage can improve. Carter occasionally plays with a higher pad level than he should. Tight hips and questionable lateral mobility. Was a “tweener”, needs to find a true position as an off ball linebacker or true edge backer.

The Verdict: Carter would be a project very similar to Tanoh Kpassgnon. Where Tanoh flashed more pass rush ability, Carter showed more coverage and strength against the run. If you’re taking Carter you’re taking the upside and the athleticism and trusting that he can learn to rush the passer. If he puts it all together, Carter could end up being the steal of the draft.
