Vontae Davis will continue free agent tour after Bills, Browns
By Matt Conner
Vontae Davis will reportedly continue his free agent tour even beyond his first two visits to the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills.
Free agency doesn’t open for nearly another month, but one free agent cornerback, Vontae Davis, has been able to schedule his own tour without much in the way of competition. Beyond his first two stops with the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills, it will be interesting to see who else the former Indianapolis Colts cornerback adds to his agenda.
Davis, 29, spent all day on Friday with the Browns, per reports, after spending the previous day further north with the Bills. Both teams could certainly use help in the secondary (true of most teams), especially if Buffalo will lose E.J. Gaines to free agency. But so far, no reports of any contract offers have emerged from either team, and Davis’s agent confirmed they left Buffalo without an offer.
The Kansas City Chiefs are one such team who could be on the receiving end of a visit given their need at cornerback. Going into free agency and especially the draft with such the issues at cornerback already addressed could go a long way toward a very productive offseason in Brett Veach’s first year as general manager.

Last year, the Chiefs attempted a number of potential fixes at the starting outside corner spot opposite Marcus Peters, but nothing worked out and defensive coordinator Bob Sutton admitted as much. Steven Nelson looks the best of the bunch among internal candidates, but he’s also adept in the slot. As for the rest, which includes Terrance Mitchell, Kenneth Acker and Phillip Gaines, nothing seemed to work as hoped—although Mitchell certainly has shown flashes in the past and has a penchant for creating turnovers.
Already this offseason, Veach has used the Chiefs best trade asset in starting quarterback Alex Smith to bring in competition at cornerback in former Washington Redskins CB Kendall Fuller. This lessens the need for other large-scale investments at the position because Peters and Fuller atop the depth chart is a nice enough start. It also allows for a bit more risk in other maneuvers which would be perfect for Davis’s scenario.
Vontae Davis was let go by the Indianapolis Colts after only playing five games this season due to injury, although the Colts said he was healthy enough to play. It was a bitter divorce after Davis enjoyed several productive seasons in Indy, and now Davis is likely going to have to take a prove-it sort of deal to show he’s a healthy, productive and decent citizen once again.
At his best, Davis can certainly play outside corner in a base defense and match the physical nature of the rest of the Chiefs secondary, just like Sutton loves his corners to play. With Fuller and Nelson also present (Mitchell, Acker and Gaines are all free agents), the quartet would immediately be one of the AFC’s best overall. They’d also go a long way toward fixing the Chiefs broken defense heading into 2018.
