It makes sense for the Kansas City Chiefs to bring back Tyler Bray to be the third quarterback on the roster for at least one more season.

The position of quarterback is without a doubt the most important position in the NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs are turning over a new leaf at the start of the 2018 season by starting Patrick Mahomes, yet a question still remains. Who will back up the young quarterback?

Tyler Bray does have some positives. (Yes, I know that’s hard to believe, but bear with me.) First, he is tall. Standing at 6’6, he can easily survey the field from the pocket. Like Mahomes, Bray also possesses great arm strength. That comes in very handy throwing to speedy guys like Tyreek Hill. He also has the ability to make the pocket work for him in very tight situations. Bray also can change his arm slot while still delivering an accurate ball.

Now, on to his glaring negatives. Bray may stand at 6’6, but he is a thinly built quarterback making him susceptible to injury. He is extremely inconsistent in his play. Bray might make three great throws, then throw a ball that makes you cringe. His accuracy can go from sensational to abysmal VERY quickly. Bray’s footwork, while improved, is still below average. He also has a tendency to stare down his primary read, making him very easy to read from a defensive standpoint.

Will Tyler Bray be the number two quarterback on the Chiefs depth chart? No, of course not. I fully expect the Chiefs to explore free agency and sign a veteran back-up. (Please let it be Chase Daniel.) Perhaps practicing with Mahomes and a veteran can help Bray further improve his skill set. You also have to take into the fact he is still learning from quarterback guru, Andy Reid. Considering his last contract was $1.2 million, he can easily be resigned for something in that same area. Why? Bray is going to get nothing on the open market. He simply hasn’t shown other teams any reason for them to pursue him.

Because he is familiar to the team and with the playbook, it makes sense for Bray to continue to be the third quarterback on the Chiefs roster.
