We’ve got questions about the way head coach Andy Reid might handle the Kansas City Chiefs offensive play calling moving forward.

If you’re keeping count with us, the number, so far, is two.

That’s the number of times Andy Reid has given up play calling for the Kansas City Chiefs offense over the last five seasons in the hopes of creating some momentum. First it was Doug Pederson taking over the offensive controls in 2015. This year, Matt Nagy took over after the Chiefs midseason slump. Both men have since went on to serve as head coaches for the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears, respectively.

The loss of Nagy this offseason means that Kansas City once again has no experienced play caller outside of Reid himself, unless the rumors about Brad Childress’s retirement were a bit premature. That’s not to say that Reid doesn’t have options, but he simply has no way of knowing if those options are any good. Then again, no one knew if Pederson or Nagy could handle it until they were given a shot.

Yet the loss of Nagy, Childress and even Pederson over the last two years has significantly shifted the offensive side of the staff, specifically in terms of youth. This last year was Greg Lewis’s first year as a wide receivers coach. Deland McCullough will coach his first year in 2018 as the team’s new running backs coach. This will also be Eric Bieniemy’s first year as a coordinator at the professional level.

There are longtime holdovers on the offensive side of the coaching staff, including Tom Melvin, a longtime tight ends coach who has been with Reid since 1999. Andy Heck is also a very experienced offensive line coach. Corey Matthaei has been alongside Reid for 8 years now as assistant quarterbacks coach, there is some continuity and stability around the franchise. It’s just at its lowest point since Reid first arrived.

It will be interesting to see if there’s a point next year when Bieniemy gets his chance to call some plays. He’s earned the right to do so now that he’s been named offensive coordinator, yet we also have to realize this entire next year will be a learning curve, even as he’s also been around to know more than we might initially expect.

What do you think? Do you think Reid will call the offensive shots in 2018? Will he let Bieniemy try it out?
