Black Monday is expected to result in several head coaching openings, and Matt Nagy and Dave Toub are Chiefs assistants who could get a few interviews.

The Andy Reid coaching tree has been expected to branch out even further this offseason ever since rumors began circulating about this season’s hot seats. Even last year, special teams coach Dave Toub garnered two interviews in the offseason with the Denver Broncos and (then) San Diego Chargers. This year, Toub is once again expected to be a hot coaching commodity along with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as teams seek to emulate the Chiefs steady success of the last five years.

The only teams with winning records over each of the last five seasons have been the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks. The Philadelphia Eagles were one of the first to poach Reid’s staff in K.C. by hiring Doug Pederson, and now the Eagles are top seed in the NFC. That sort of immediate success not only makes the Eagles look savvy, but it reflects well on Reid’s overall stock.

Toub has earned league-wide respect as one of the most honored special teams coaches in the game. While hiring a special teams coordinator as a head coach is a rarity, it’s not without precedent considering John Harbaugh’s success with the Baltimore Ravens. (Former Chiefs coaches Marv Levy and Dick Vermeil also sort of made the same leap.)

Nagy was already known in league circles as a bright young mind who has been tethered to Andy Reid for quite some time, but in recent week’s he’s earned even more credibility. At one point during the Chiefs midseason slump, Reid handed over the offensive playcalling duties to Nagy to shake things up and the Chiefs offense roared back to life. In recent weeks, with Nagy at the helm, Alex Smith has repeated his early season MVP-caliber numbers, Kareem Hunt has found his mojo for a strong rookie of the year run and Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce are putting the finishing touches on Pro Bowl seasons.

It also helps that a couple execs familiar with Reid’s staff up close have now come into positions of power. John Dorsey is calling the shots in Cleveland for the Browns and Chris Ballard is entering his second offseason with the Indianapolis Colts. Ian Rapoport links both candidates with the Colts in terms of interest, but both will likely get multiple issues with so many openings around the NFL and the Chiefs ongoing success.
