Andy Reid might have given away playcalling duties on Sunday but that doesn’t mean it will stay that way for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Before the Kansas City Chiefs took to the field on Sunday at MetLife Stadium to play the New York Jets, NFL analyst Chris Mortensen dropped a bit of a bombshell with the news that head coach Andy Reid had decided to give offensive playcalling duties to Matt Nagy. Moving forward, Reid says he’s not sure what the arrangement will be.

When speaking to reporters after the game, Reid provided a bit more insight into the move, saying that he wanted to absorb the blame himself for the team’s lackluster performance in recent weeks and that he trusts the personnel around him to do the job well.

“I told you before that I always look in the mirror first,” said Reid to reporters. “I’ve got good people around me, and so I gave them an opportunity, Matt Nagy in particular and Brad [Childress], to put us in a position to do a little better. There were some good things. There were some things as an offense we can get better at.”

When asked by reporters whether or not the Chiefs would continue with this same arrangement, Reid was non-committal on the future, saying the team would evaluate as they go, like everything else they do.

“Game by game, we evaluate everything, but I saw some good things. The offense did some good things, but again, when you have the ball in your hands at the end, you’ve gotta score. That’s your objective.”

The Chiefs certainly showed a spark offensively that fans hadn’t seen over the last several weeks. During the team’s losing streak, Alex Smith went from being in the middle of the MVP conversation to being caught in a quarterback controversy—at least from the perspective of the majority of Chiefs fans. However on Sunday, the old Smith was back, taking chances down the field and rewarding the team with 31 total points on the board and 4 touchdown passes to his credit.

Nagy, the team’s offensive coordinator, has been described in glowing terms as a future head coach prospect, so this sort of experience should serve him well in the interim. It will be interesting to see whether Reid is fine with loosening his grip on the ultimate controls or whether he decides to take back a bit of responsibility if the Chiefs cannot immediately right the ship versus the Oakland Raiders on Sunday.
