For the second time already this season, Kareem Hunt could be named FedEx Ground Player of the Week for his play against the Chargers.

Three weeks into his rookie season in the NFL, running back Kareem Hunt is already getting used to awards and accolades that come with maintaining such a historic level of production. This week, Hunt was announced as a nominee for the FedEx Ground Player of the Week Award for the second time this year.

Hunt led all running backs in yardage this week with 172 rushing yards on only 17 carries, good for an incredible 10.1 yards/carry average. Hunt now leads the entire NFL in rushing yards by a wide margin of 113 rushing yards, and he’s proven capable of putting up significant totals as a pass catcher as well. While he put up only a single touchdown in the Chiefs win over the Chargers, Hunt already has six touchdowns on the season.

Hunt was the Chiefs third round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, and they traded up to get the Toledo running back to help stabilize what had been a troubled spot for the Chiefs. Spencer Ware was the team’s featured back entering the season and showed great promise last year, but he also faded down the stretch as he dealt with a heavy workload and a hamstring injury. It was Ware’s first full year as a lead back, which might have led to some fatigue as well. The Chiefs had also released oft-injured running back Jamaal Charles.

Then this preseason, Ware was lost for the season after tearing his MCL and PCL, an injury which made Hunt the featured running back—rookie or not. In response, Hunt has showed himself to be the perfect fit for K.C.’s offense with 538 yards from scrimmage through 3 games.
