Quarterbacks:
Alex Smith
Patrick Mahomes
Tyler Bray

No big surprises here. The Chiefs said all along that Alex Smith was going to be given the keys to the Kingdom and this is still his show to run. Even Brett Veach went out of his way to say as much on Saturday, declaring there’s no quarterback competition where, indeed, there’s been no quarterback competition.

It should be noted here that Patrick Mahomes took no time at all to ascend to the second quarterback spot and Tyler Bray has now officially missed any window to ever start for the Chiefs whatsoever. But Mahomes is clearly a top-notch back-up whose promise is going to keep the heat on Alex Smith as the starter no matter what is said to the press. The Chiefs need to win now and if there’s any sign that Smith is aging, unable to run to keep defenses honest or the offense is stalling, there could be a transition at some point.

For now, the Chiefs have a good quarterback who will intelligently run the offense until the promising arm can take over. That’s better than most QB situations in the NFL these days, and they have John Dorsey to thank for it.
