Steelers rumors: Knile Davis will be released
By Matt Conner
The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly going to release Knile Davis after signing him as a free agent running back and returner earlier this offseason.
Knile Davis is going to be a free agent once again, this time only months after he first hit free agency and signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ian Rapoport has word that the Steelers are likely to move on from the veteran back despite just signing him last March.
Davis seemed excited to play for the Steelers after four years in Kansas City where he was buried on the depth chart behind Jamaal Charles for several seasons. With the Steelers, he wasn’t going to be a featured back but he could have found work as a back-up along with being a potential returner. Now he’s looking for work once again.

The Chiefs moved on from both Charles and Davis earlier this offseason and restocked the depth chart by signing C.J. Spiller and drafting Kareem Hunt. Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West were veteran holdovers on the roster, but now the Chiefs have lost Ware for the season due to injury.
Given the questions at returner with Tyreek Hill moving to the offense full-time, perhaps the Chiefs might be interested in a reunion, depending on how the coaching staff feels about the potential for De’Anthony Thomas or Jehu Chesson. If Davis were to return, it would likely signal the end of Thomas’s career in K.C., but given how positive the team has been about Thomas—especially recent praise from Dave Toub—it’s likely Davis will have to find a brand new team to sign with for the 2017 season.
Davis has 250 career carries for 805 yards and 11 touchdowns.
