The Kansas City Chiefs will definitely be without running back Spencer Ware for entirety of the 2017 and maybe even beyond after hearing his latest update.
Spencer Ware has a long road ahead. The Kansas City Chiefs running back went down with a knee injury early in the team’s third preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks at CenturyLink Field. Early word was a sprained knee for Ware, but further MRI results and medical opinions have concluded the damage to Ware’s knee was much more extensive than initially realized—with multiple torn ligaments in his knee.
What is clear is that Kareem Hunt, C.J. Spiller and Charcandrick West will undoubtedly make the Chiefs final roster now that Ware will officially sit all season. Ware will definitely be missed as the team’s featured back and most physical runner who also had decent hands out of the backfield. Hunt is an untested rookie who has a lot to learn at the pro level despite an impressive preseason showing. Spiller is a reclamation project in the mold of Joe McKnight from a few years ago and West hasn’t exactly looked all that great despite breaking off big runs against subpar competition in the preseason.

Ware had 1,368 yards from scrimmage last year for the Chiefs, a career-high by far after totaling only 408 yards from scrimmage the previous season. Ware’s first year as a featured showcased what he could do, but fatigue and injuries forced Ware to hit the wall at midseason. Hence the Chiefs move for Hunt in the draft.
It’s unknown whether or not Ware should expect to be back in time for next year’s training camp, but that certainly has to be the goal. Ware will be 26-years-old at this time next year with plenty of tread left on the tires if he’s able to overcome the physical and mental hurdles of multiple ligament tears.
