2018 Chiefs Draft Prospect: Colorado State WR Michael Gallup
Colorado State wide receiver Michael Gallup looks like he could be a strong potential addition for the Chiefs in 2018.
While we’re all excited for the 2017 regular season to kick off, we’re also keen to keep one eye looking ahead to next offseason and the excitement of next year’s draft. It should be fun to watch particular players in college football this year to see what they might add to the Kansas City Chiefs next offseason.
As we move across the U.S. conference by conference, we began last week by taking a closer look at linebacking prospect Azeem Victor from Washington. This week, we enter the Mountain West where a promising wide receiver, Michael Gallup, will be worth watching all year.
Monroe High School
Gallup was raised in Monroe, Georgia. Monroe is just 45 minutes east of Atlanta (Go Braves!) and a town of just around 13,000 people. Monroe is mostly known for being the leading producer of cotton during the 1900s and a confederate soldier and governor named Alfred Colquitt.
Gallup and the Tornadoes finished the season at 6-5 with a loss to state runner-up, Wayne County. Gallup was a big part of the Monroe offense throughout the season, scoring 17 touchdowns and 1,150 yards of total offense. The wide receiver/running back finished the season with 28 receptions for 637 yards and 10 touchdowns. Gallup also rushed for 484 yards and seven touchdowns.

Michael was a four sport athlete in high school, playing basketball, football, track, and baseball. It was once he found that he was best suited to play football, that the other sports were put on the back burner. Gallup received offers from Kentucky, Missouri and North Carolina State. Unfortunately, his grades were not good enough and that led him to Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas.
Junior College
Gallup finished his freshman season at Butler with 45 receptions for 780 yards and 11 touchdowns. On Oct. 11 against Dodge City, Gallup caught 5 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns.
Michael played in just three games as a sophomore–catching nine passes for 74 yards and a touchdown. After his sophomore campaign, Gallup chose Colorado State over Kansas State.
Colorado State
Gallup didn’t exactly burst onto the scene in his first few games with the Rams, catching just four passes for 38 yards. It was in week three against Northern Colorado that the junior wide receiver came out of his shell, catching four passes for 82 yards and a touchdown.
In Gallup’s final 11 games, he averaged 6.5 receptions, 112 yards and a touchdown. Gallup’s best game came against the Air Force Academy when he caught 13 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown. Gallup caught three touchdowns in each of their final two games of the season. The Georgia native finished the season with 76 receptions for 1,272 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Gallup started the 2017 season with 11 receptions for 134 yards in the team’s season opener against Oregon State.
Measurables and Draft Stock
According to NFLDraftScout.com, Gallup is the seventh rated wide receiver going into the 2018 draft. This of course will change one the underclassmen declare for the draft after the 2017 season.
Gallup is just over six-foot tall, weighs 200 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash between 4.4 and 4.5 seconds. Michael Gallup will be tested over the next few weeks in matchups against Colorado on Sep. 1 and Alabama on Sep.16. Performing well in those two games could go a long way in increasing his draft stock.
Gallup plays bigger than he really is. You see him constantly winning jump balls and he is sneaky fast in the open field. Watching some of his film, he reminds me a little of Kareem Hunt in the fact that he is not quick to go down.
Why the Chiefs
Our dear Kansas City Chiefs are really lacking at the wide receiver position. Chris Conley has been a non-factor the entire preseason and Tyreek Hill cannot do it all by himself. I believe that Gallup will be there in the second round when the Chiefs pick in the 2018 draft. The Chiefs will have to make improvements to their wide receiver corp at some point this offseason—maybe Gallup can be a part of that solution.
Who’s Next?
Next week I will travel to Morgantown, West Virginia. Again, I will not actually be going to West Virginia, but I will give an in-depth look at safety, Kyzir White.
