Tyler Bray is now No. 3 on the quarterback depth chart as Andy Reid and company want to see what Patrick Mahomes can do at No. 2 overall.
Alex Smith is still the clear No. 1 quarterback on the Kansas City Chiefs roster, but there’s still plenty of attention on the position as Andy Reid, the team’s head coach, has announced a change at back-up. Reid has made rookie Patrick Mahomes the team’s No. 2 quarterback in place of Tyler Bray, who no moves to No. 3 on the depth chart.
Smith, Mahomes and Bray all flashed solid showings against the San Francisco 49ers. Mahomes and Smith had touchdown throws, but even Bray, who had a single interception, made some nice throws as well. However, Mahomes did so against inferior competition later in the game, and Reid says the staff wants to see how he can handle a bit better competition.
Reid explained the move to the media from training camp, pointing the spotlight away from Bray for anything bad and toward Mahomes instead.

"“It’s not because of Tyler’s performance in the game,” Reid said. “I thought he actually did very well … and Patrick did a nice job, too. It gives [Mahomes] an opportunity to step up and work with that second group and see what he can do there. It’s not something [Tyler] didn’t do. [Tyler] is playing well. But Patrick has also done a nice job. In order to step up with that group, Pat would have had to [make] progress.”"
Bray completed 5 of 8 passes for 63 passing yards and an interception. Mahomes completed 7 of 9 passes for 69 passing yards and a touchdown. He also had a 40 yard strike that was called back due to a holding penalty.
Mahomes was the Chiefs first round pick after they traded up to No. 10 with the Buffalo Bills. He’s the team’s only first round QB selection since 1983, when they drafted Todd Blackledge.
