Alex Smith and Patrick Mahomes played well in the Chiefs loss to the 49ers to open their 2017 preseason schedule.

Kansas City Chiefs rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes had his first preseason game and played well. Mahomes only finished 7-9 for 49 yards and a TD but had another long completion called back for holding. Overall the rookie didn’t look like a rookie or like a player that the game was too big for. Patrick showed poise and composure throughout his first performance in a Chiefs uniform. There are many things he will need to work on moving forward. His touchdown pass was a riskier throw as well throwing across his body. However, he held to what he has said before, he will use his mobility to run behind the line of scrimmage to try to continue to make plays down the field.

Mahomes was easily the story of the night for most of Chiefs Kingdom. There were several young players that stood out with their performances. Kareem Hunt, Kevin Pierre-Louis, and Rakeem Nunez-Roches are just a few players that played very well. The Chiefs will need to improve their run defense and their third and fourth team units were outplayed but it was a great first showing for many players.

The Chiefs head back to Saint Joseph for four more practices before training camp ends on Wednesday. In the coming weeks, we will find out whether or not camp will return to Missouri Western. For now, my guess is that it will for the next two years, but beyond that it’s hard to know. The Chiefs head to Cincinnati next Saturday to play the Bengals. The starters will get a little bit more time to play as they continue to prepare for their week one prime-time opener against the New England Patriots.
