Chris Taylor took notes during the Chiefs first preseason game with thoughts from each quarter during The Day After.

The Kansas City Chiefs fell to the San Francisco 49ers in their first preseason game of the 2017 season, but everyone in Chiefs Kingdom is all smiles after seeing how well the starters played along with seeing Patrick Mahomes’s first touchdown. To give us a retrospective of last night’s play, Chris Taylor took notes from each quarter for a look back on The Day After.

1st Quarter

That first play though, that had to warm everyone’s hearts just a bit. Exactly what we wanted to see. Exactly what we hoped to see. Thank you Andy Reid.

Alex Smith is still doing Alex Smith things. Now, although I jumped up off my seat just as you all did, it did appear that Tyreek Hill had to slow down on the play. Perhaps Hill’s speed is still an issue when timing comes into play? No biggie, it was exactly what we wanted to see.

Most of the first drive looked like the Chiefs of old to me. Drop offs, a scramble, a defensive penalty, and a 2 yard touchdown run by Spencer Ware. Safe and efficient, the Chiefs did what they needed to do.

Cue the defense! A swapped pass by Mr. Peters and a tackle for a 3-yard loss by Allen Bailey (welcome back!) followed by a formation penalty and an incomplete pass gave the ball right back to the Chiefs offense. Looking good.

Goodbye Alex Smith, hello Tyler Bray. Wouldn’t you know the very first play went to Chris Conley deep down the far sideline for a touchdown. Are you kidding me? Of course, it didn’t count, Conley got caught cheating. But Conley is perhaps the biggest question mark. How he plays this season could seriously change the face of this offense. Two plays later Conley caught a 29 yard pass down field on a curl, double covered.

A few plays later Bray threw the ball to the other team, suggesting it was their turn to try and score. Oh Tyler Bray.

The defense kept the 49ers out of the end zone despite the great field position, holding them to a field goal. Still looking good. Ramik Wilson will start week 1 next to DJ, you heard it here first, unless someone has said it before you read this of course.

Conley made one more great catch before leaving the game because it hurts. The defense gave up a huge pass play before making a goal line stand to hold them to another goal line stand to hold them to a field goal. Same old Chiefs defense. Is that Matt Barkley? Hmm.

For every other word typed here, a penalty flag was thrown.

Spencer Ware reminded everyone how much he likes to catch the ball. Chris Conley looked like a solid #2 wide receiver. Tyler Bray likes to hold clipboards and the defense looked Chief-like. Overall the first quarter, and a couple minutes of the 2nd, was a pleasant scene.
