Nick Saban has hired a familiar face to Chiefs fans with the reported addition of defensive back Javier Arenas to his football staff.
Javier Arenas served a number of functions as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs after he was drafted with the team’s second round selection in the 2010 NFL Draft. Not only did he serve as a returner in special teams units, but he also was a cornerback in Romeo Crennel’s defense. Now he will be filling an unknown role for a new yet familiar head coach, at least to Arenas, in Nick Saban, as he’s been announced as the latest hire for the Alabama football staff.
Arenas returned an incredible 7 career punts for touchdowns during his career at Alabama and he was expected to revolutionize the position for the Chiefs as well. However, he never dominated at the NFL level the way he did in the SEC, and he struggled even more in pass coverage for the Chiefs. He started a total of 12 games for the Chiefs and had 131 total tackles during his three year tenure in K.C.

Fortunately, Arenas should be much happier back in Alabama. He enjoyed a very successful career under Saban and will be able to offer plenty of experience from his years in K.C. as well as with the Arizona Cardinals to students currently mentored by Saban. It’s a smart move for Saban to bring in former NFL players to help mentor his newest players and adds even more credibility to a program that hardly needs it. Arenas’s role is undefined at this point under Saban.
Arenas’s 7 return touchdowns are still a career-best in the SEC and No. 3 overall in NCAA history.
