A Q&A with Peter Panacy of Niner Noise takes a look at whether free agent cornerback Tramaine Brock makes sense for the Chiefs.

When a player becomes a free agent and hits the open market, it’s understandable for every team’s fan base to ask whether or not he could be a good fit. Every team at this time of year is trying to get better, so one team’s trash is another team’s treasure, for lack of a better phrase, That’s why Jeremy Maclin had multiple offers after the Chiefs released him, why Eric Decker found a market after being released by the Jets and so on. The latest free agent to draw significant interest per reports is former San Francisco 49ers cornerback Tramaine Brock.

In April, Brock was arrested on domestic violence charges that were dropped earlier this week. Teams are now more interested given that the legal cloud has lifted, although the Niners are not one given that they immediately distanced themselves from Brock after his arrest. Brock was San Fran’s top corner last season, and in a passing league, every team could potentially enjoy the boost provided by Brock.

In Kansas City, there are questions at cornerback opposite Marcus Peters on the outside, and while there are candidates already in house, the Chiefs could look outside for an upgrade if the price and talent and fit made sense. It’s also important to note that the Chiefs have had several defensive backs injured during training camp already, which has led to recent additions like Jacoby Glenn and Larry Scott.

To get a better read on Tramaine Brock as a payer and person, we reached to Peter Panacy, the expert at Niner Noise, for a breakdown and whether Brock even makes sense for the Chiefs.

The charges were dropped against Tramaine Brock. Did SF misplay this one or do you think they were right to let him go?

The 49ers did right by parting ways with Tramaine Brock, even if the legal system hadn’t played itself out yet. San Francisco’s previous regime under former general manager Trent Baalke would have taken the long road and dragged things out forever, like it did with Aldon Smith and Ray McDonald. It was a bad look then.

For fans who haven’t watched much of Brock on the field, what’s his style of play and best ability?

Brock is pretty good about locking down on players, as long as he has help over the top. One of his strengths is the ability to jam similarly built receivers at the line of scrimmage. The only problem with this, though, is he’s not the kind of corner capable of staying with someone who has either top speed or elusive separation abilities. It’s probably why he wouldn’t have been a fit in San Francisco’s Cover 3 scheme anyway.

What should a team never ask Brock to do? Any other weaknesses?

Kind of related to the previous question, Brock isn’t a player who should operate on an island. He’s never been good at one-on-one coverage.

Do you have any predictions where he could end up?

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Philadelphia Eagles nabbed him. With Sidney Jones’ injury situation something to monitor, and the Eagles needing all the secondary help they can get, it might be a situation where he could benefit from not being a high-profile pickup and contribute in a situation right away.
