The Kansas City Chiefs have added a couple new cornerbacks to the roster with several injuries taking their toll in the secondary.

Steven Nelson is dealing with a groin injury. Terrance Mitchell has been seeing the trainer the last couple days in training camp. Keith Baxter is another defensive back who hasn’t been able to practice. With the need for some more healthy defensive backs in training camp for the Kansas City Chiefs, general manager Brett Veach made some moves to add two new options: Jacoby Glenn and Larry Scott.

Glenn entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bears in 2015 and he spent the last two years in the Windy City. He was released in May and the Chiefs are his second team. Scott has played with the San Diego Chargers after a college career at Oregon State.

The injuries have likely made it a bit tougher to sort out the competition at two key spots in the secondary. The most important spot is who will start on the outside opposite Marcus Peters in Week 1. Mitchell held down the spot down the stretch and allowed opposing quarterbacks a scant 55.5 passer rating when throwing toward him.

Phillip Gaines is another option who was a high investment (as a third round choice) who has never quite stayed healthy or consistent enough. In a contract year, we might see the best of Gaines yet. The other option is Nelson, who is himself trying to stay healthy. He has the inside slot corner spot locked down, but he also played plenty on the outside and is physical enough despite being a bit smaller.

The other area of competition is for the fringe spots at the bottom of the roster. From former draft picks like D.J. White, who has flashed in camp, and Leon McQuay to free agents like De’Vante Bausby to undrafted rookies like Ashton Lampkin, there is plenty of competition for just a couple spots. The Chiefs will undoubtedly lose some valuable players to the waiver wire once roster cuts are due.

It’s unlikely Glenn or Scott end up earning any real chance to stick unless they can somehow make up for lost time in training camp this weekend.
