KANSAS CITY, MO - OCTOBER 23: Running back Jamaal Charles

The Denver Broncos plan on giving former Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles 8-10 touches every game if he can stay healthy.

Jamaal Charles has been cleared to fully participate in practice for the Denver Broncos. That phrase still takes a bit of adjusting if you’ve been a Kansas City Chiefs fan for long. The former Chiefs running back is now a member of the AFC West division rivals, and after a couple years dealing with knee issues of one kind or another, Charles says he’s feeling great and ready to return to the field. The Broncos certainly hope they’ve found a comeback candidate.

The plan on offense, per Peter King of Monday Morning Quarterback, is to give Charles 8 to 10 touches every game. That’s 128 to 160 total touches on the season. Over the last two years, Charles has had 115 total touches for the Chiefs, calculating rushing attempts and passing targets, which means the Broncos are being cautiously optimistic about the veteran’s potential to return.

Even as recently as 2014, Charles would approach twice that number of targets as the pivotal back in the Chiefs offense. Now the Broncos aren’t asking him to be anything but a bonus accoutrement, perhaps even a decoy for defenses to have to account for in case they end up using him. It just might work since defensive coordinators know fully well what a healthy Charles is capable of. If that’s even a threat, the game plan will be adjusted when Charles is out there.

Charles was released by the Chiefs earlier this offseason. He left the franchise as their all-time rushing leader with 7,260 career rushing yards.
