Robert Griffin III tried out for the Los Angeles Chargers and could make an interesting back-up behind Philip Rivers.
The quarterback depth chart doesn’t matter too much for the Los Angeles Chargers given how steady the play and availability of Philip Rivers has been over the years, but that doesn’t mean the Chargers should prepare for the worst. After all, it only takes a single play to shake up the entire depth chart. That’s what makes a recent workout with Robert Griffin III so interesting.

It wasn’t that long ago that Kirk Cousins was relegated to back-up status and the Indianapolis Colts made the wrong choice in the draft—RGIII was simply that exciting as a player. Washington had paid a hefty price to move up and get him, but it seemed worth it after a rookie year that showed an incredible athleticism to go with a strong arm and clutch instincts—one that featured 20 touchdown passes, only 5 interceptions, a 9-6 record and another 800+ rushing yards with 7 rushing touchdowns.
From there, the fall has been a precipitous one for RGIII with issues ranging from injuries to inaccuracy. Even a one-year stint under Hue Jackson failed to yield any real promising results, but the history and athleticism is enough to at least warrant a continued look for another year or two in the NFL if he can’t get back on track. Some team is hoping to strike gold and it’s not a bad bet for the Chargers.
No official deal has been made yet, as of press time, but it will be interesting to watch since Griffin would provide some high upside and a nice buy-low opportunity for the Chargers. After all, Kellen Clemens and the rest of the depth chart fails to generate even a minimal level of confidence.
