Stanley Jean-Baptiste finds a home with the Jacksonville Jaguars
By Matt Conner
Earlier this offseason, Stanley Jean-Baptiste was brought in as a longshot to make the roster by John Dorsey. Now he’s caught on with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are thinking the same thing John Dorsey was thinking earlier this offseason: to see what Stanley Jean-Baptiste has left after a long absence from the NFL. The former second round pick of the New Orleans Saints has failed to live up to his early draft billing, but perhaps the Jags will like what they see as Jean-Baptiste tries to resurrect his career.
The Jaguars also worked out free agent tight end Gary Barnidge as well, but Jean-Baptiste was the only one rewarded with a new contract. He’ll hope to compete with this year’s seventh round pick Jalen Myrick and several undrafted free agents for a rare roster spot on the end of the depth chart. A spot was open for Jean-Baptiste in the secondary once Jalen Ramsey opened training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.
Jean-Baptiste landed with the Chiefs earlier this offseason when John Dorsey took a flier on him after a tryout with the team. He was eventually cut to make room for other players, but it was a nice sighting after he’d largely disappeared from the spotlight post-New Orleans. He spent the 2015 season on the practice squads of the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks, but was completely out of the NFL during the 2016 season.
The odds are still against Jean-Baptiste, but it’s an interesting story to see a still young cornerback make his way back to the pros after such a long absence.
