Former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers is a free agent looking for a home, and the Patriots and Cardinals are showing serious interest.

For years, fans of the Kansas City Chiefs watched Brandon Flowers anchor the team’s pass defense for his first few years in the NFL. Now a veteran player heading into his 10th NFL season, Flowers is looking for a new team, his third, on the eve of training camps opening league-wide. Two specific teams are drawing his interest, including the returning Super Bowl champions.

Flowers only played in six games last season for the San Diego Chargers (now Los Angeles) but he started each of those contests. Unfortunately concussions have become a real concern for Flowers, which should make any team concerned about signing him. Then again, every player deals with those types of worries and clearly Flowers isn’t ready to walk away from the game just yet despite nine years in the NFL.

For the Patriots, Flowers would be the sort of veteran addition we’re used to seeing as longtime players line up in the hopes to get their rings. It’s the ideal scenario that such a winning culture creates, drawing in veteran talent on the cheap in return for providing, for many players, the first real chance at a Super Bowl title.

Last season, Flowers had 28 total tackles, 1 interception and 5 passes defended in six games for the Chargers. He played his first six seasons with the Chiefs after the team drafted him in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He became an immediate starter and, along with Brandon Carr, developed into one of the NFL’s best young secondaries. Both players cashed in on the open market after serving out their first few years with the Chiefs.

Flowers has 21 career interceptions.
