Lost in the shuffle of John Dorsey’s exit is the fact that Andy Reid will be at the helm for the Chiefs for nearly a decade.
It’s too bad the mood won’t allow us to celebrate. John Dorsey’s exit from the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday was so shocking that it’s still hard to believe. Unfortunately the resulting drama—the shock, the search for reasons why—clouded the bit, a considerable bit, of good news to also come out at the exact same time: Andy Reid will remain with the Kansas City Chiefs for quite some time.
Chiefs team owner Clark Hunt announced Thursday that Reid was going to stay the team’s head coach through 2021, thanks to a shiny new contract extension. Reid was entering his final season with the Chiefs, along with Dorsey, and Hunt had mentioned throughout the offseason that he was working on long-term plans for both men.

Reid’s tenure with the Chiefs has only continued to enhance his long-term legacy and success. Sure, it’s easy to nitpick a coach’s tendencies, but taking the broad view shows a coach who was already one of the most successful active coaches in the NFL continuing to win even more in a new environment.
Reid has won 43 regular season games with the Chiefs with three playoff appearances, including the franchise’s first playoff victory in 22 years. The Chiefs also won the AFC West last season and seem prepared for another playoff run, with their future franchise quarterback already in house in Patrick Mahomes.
Reid’s announcement deserved better than this, even as Dorsey deserved the same.
