Chiefs rumors: Eric Decker draws no interest from Kansas City
By Matt Conner
According to Benjamin Allbright, fans shouldn’t expect the Chiefs to even kick the tires on free agent wide receiver Eric Decker.
Over the last few days, the free agent market has changed considerably for teams searching for some help at wide receiver. Not only did the Kansas City Chiefs release Jeremy Maclin for some much needed cap room (about $10 million worth), but the New York Jets also set Eric Decker free. Both should draw a decent amount of interest on the open market.
Maclin has already drawn interest from the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens enough to make some free agent visits, while the Cleveland Browns have also called to check in, per reports. Decker was released later, so expect momentum for him to build in the coming week with perhaps his first visit to come by Friday or this weekend. That said, the Kansas City Chiefs are not expected to be one of those teams calling agents about Decker’s interest or availability.
Allbright’s insight is fairly predictable, unless Decker was super keen to play for Andy Reid on a minimum salary. If the Chiefs didn’t even reportedly approach Maclin about taking a pay cut, then they’re likely not going to be interested in bringing in another veteran who is unfamiliar with the team, the offensive scheme, etc. The Chiefs, instead, seem quite ready to let the kids play and earn their playing time, living up to the NFL’s maxim of “next man up.”
Decker has 9 catches for 194 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns last year for the Jets.
