The Saskatchewan Roughriders held a moment of silence during the opening of training camp for running back Joe McKnight.
The loss of running back Joe McKnight was felt all over the world of football when Ronald Gasser took his life in a road rage incident. The former Kansas City Chiefs RB was gunned down after getting out of his car as an altercation was clearly growing. McKnight died there on the spot in his hometown of Terrytown, Louisiana after being shot by Gasser, who is pleading not guilty to the charges.
McKnight had most recently played in the Canadian Football League after playing his first few years out of college in the NFL with the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs. Just last season, he’d played with both the Edmonton Eskimos and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Roughriders held a moment of silence for McKnight’s memory during the team’s opening of training camp on Monday.
"“I don’t think we’ve come to a closure moment as of yet,’’ Riders tailback Greg Morris said Monday. “I know for sure that a lot of us on this team, including me, are going to have this season dedicated to him.’’"

McKnight officially played only two games in 2014 for the Chiefs and only put up stats in one, but it was a memorable performance where McKnight came from nowhere to pop out on the stat sheet. He caught 6 passes for 64 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns that day and also returned 3 kicks for 65 yards against the Miami Dolphins. It was a heralded return for the former USC phenom and signaled great things to come, another unearthed gem for John Dorsey. Unfortunately, McKnight tore his Achilles tendon in practice just days later and ended the season on injured reserve.
Gasser is due back in court on June 12.
