The selection of Patrick Mahomes means that Andy Reid and John Dorsey will be staying with the Kansas City Chiefs for some time.

All offseason, the questions have stirred about the future of two important people: general manager John Dorsey and head coach Andy Reid. Both men lack a long-term extension with the Chiefs from owner Clark Hunt as they head into the ends of their initial respective deals. Rumors have swirled this offseason that Dorsey might want to replace Ted Thompson back with the Green Bay Packers, his original stomping grounds, and that Reid might want to retire from coaching and return to the Philadelphia Eagles in some sort of oversight role or executive position.

If that’s the case, then the Chiefs would likely focus everything on winning here and now, picking players to plug the most immediate holes. Alex Smith is the team’s starting quarterback and will be for the next season, so if Reid and Dorsey planned on going somewhere, they would likely stick with their spot in the draft and take a defensive lineman, an inside linebacker, a cornerback or a running back. All of those are much bigger holes than a future quarterback. That is, unless both men plan on staying.

The good news for Chiefs fans is that the selection of Patrick Mahomes at No. 10 overall, and the trade up to get him, means that Dorsey and Reid are here and bound and determined to see a bright future for the former Texas Tech star. Reid is in place to help guide Mahomes to be a successful pro quarterback and they made the sort of investment that you only make if you know you’re going to be around for a while. Even with guys like Haason Reddick, Reuben Foster, Marshon Lattimore and Jonathan Allen on the board, the Chiefs traded up for a quarterback.

For those wondering if Reid or Dorsey will end up leaving Kansas City, the lack of an official extension should worry you no longer. The Chiefs personnel are acting like their future is secure even without the documentation.
