NFL Draft: How accurate are Mike Mayock’s quarterback rankings?
By Britt Zank
2009
Mayock’s Rankings:
1. Mark Sanchez
2. Matt Stafford
3. Josh Freeman
4. Pat White
5. Stephen McGee
2009 was believed to be a good year to take a quarterback. Mayock had four quarterbacks going in the first round of his mock draft that year. He had Mark Sanchez listed as his number one quarterback above No. 2 Matthew Stafford. Josh Freeman and Pat White rounded out his list of first round quarterbacks in 2009. Stafford ended up being drafted number one overall by the Detroit Lions while Sanchez went fifth overall to the New York Jets. Freeman went 17th to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while White dropped to the middle of the second round. Since the draft Stafford has put up the best numbers and been the most consistent. Sanchez has the most post season success making it to back-to-back AFC title games while the other two flamed out of the league.
Sanchez started off hot with his two title game appearances, but since then he’s known for the “Butt Fumble” more than his on field play. Despite the early success, Mayock missed on that one. Stafford has been the better quarterback, but he has had no playoff success. With the exception of drafting Calvin Johnson, the Lions have done nothing to put talent around him. Mayock was way off on his evaluations of both Freeman and White. White wasn’t ever able to even lock down the back-up role, while Freeman buckled under the pressure of being the man in Tampa. It’s hard to call either one of them anything but a bust considering where they were drafted.
