Chiefs rumors: Gerald Hodges leaves without a contract offer
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs hosted Gerald Hodges for a visit, but the free agent linebacker reportedly left town without a contract offer.
There’s a lot of uncertainty at inside linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs. From Derrick Johnson’s return from an Achilles injury at the age of 34 to how much potential younger options like Ramik Wilson or Justin March-Lillard really have, the position has its fair share of questions. The Chiefs boast an elite defense in many areas, but the heart of the defense is its weakest link.
John Dorsey agrees enough to bring in a veteran free agent for a look when inviting Gerald Hodges, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers, in for a visit. Details on the visit were sketchy before, but now Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star says that sources have revealed the visit has already come and gone without a contract offer for Hodges.
Hodges leaving Kansas City without an offer doesn’t mean Dorsey will not return later. Perhaps he’s checking out multiple options before making his final decision. However, Hodges is a promising talent who will find other suitors, if he hasn’t already, and on paper he seems like a nice fit for the Chiefs defense as a cost-effective talent who would provide stability and security in case something goes wrong either with DJ’s return from injury or with the inconsistency of a young player.
Hodges, a Penn State product, entered the league with the Minnesota Vikings as a former fourth round pick but found his professional footing with the Niners over the last two seasons. In 16 total games with San Fran, Hodges had 129 total tackles with 3 sacks, 2 interceptions and 1 forced fumble.
