The Chargers and Chiefs pick up two of the most sensational offensive talents in the draft in the latest mock projections from Daniel Jeremiah.
Daniel Jeremiah from NFL Network has has latest mock draft published, and this third round brings some key offensive talents to the AFC West. The first quarterback off the board goes to the San Diego Chargers in Deshaun Watson, a slight surprise that so many quarterbacks are slipping. Despite what you might think, however, the Chiefs do not take one of those sliding QBs, but instead turn their attention to running back Dalvin Cook.
Jeremiah is one of the most respected mock draft analysts around, so it’s a good idea to pay attention what he’s thinking for each team. For the Chiefs, he mentions the great fit and value for Cook at this spot.
"Cook is the perfect fit in Andy Reid’s system, and he would be a tremendous value at this point in the draft. The Chiefs could then turn around and trade one of their current backs for an extra draft pick."

Cook would indeed solve the need for a feature back given how Spencer Ware faded down the stretch. It’s clear he’s a much more productive back if given a complementary role. He was able to come in when Jamaal Charles was injured and fill in the gaps, and he provided a nice tandem partner with Charcandrick West. Unfortunately West was a complete no-show last season, a one-year semi-wonder whose roster spot is likely in jeopardy unless he performs well in training camp.
As for what Jeremiah mentions about getting a draft pick for a back, it seems unlikely. West is roster fodder at this point, as is C.J. Spiller, the newly signed veteran who was available for anyone just weeks ago. Ware was exposed to a degree last year and given the incredible talent available in free agency — Charles, Adrian Peterson, Eddie Lacy (who looked good last season before going down with a season-ending injury), Latavius Murray — and the draft, it’s hard to imagine a team flipping a draft asset for Ware.
