Could Mike Mayock become a general manager? That is the rumor coming out of Washington as they look to replace Scot McCloughan.
Mike Mayock is a well-respected name as an NFL talent analyst, especially before and during the annual draft. Could it be that his talents are worthy of one team keeping Mayock all to themselves? That’s the idea presented by Adam Schefter.
Washington recently fired Scot McCloughan despite his short tenure for a reported alcohol issue, but the reality is that most perceive the Washington front office and ownership to be a complete mess and a rudderless ship. Would Mayock really want to work for owner Daniel Snyder? Could he pass up the opportunity to construct a franchise? It could be a mixed bag presented to Mayock.

If Mayock is hired, it will continue a recent trend of outside-the-box thinking when it comes to hiring general managers. John Lynch was recently hired by the San Francisco 49ers, and was a television commentator when he was hired. The Niners were following the Denver Broncos protocol of bringing in a former player to run things in the mold of John Elway, who so far has enjoyed considerable success in his role as an executive.
Given how often we see retreads in these roles (e.g. Mark Dominik’s name also being floated), it would be a worthwhile experiment to at least give Mayock a real shot at the job. Whether or not he would want to work for Snyder might be the better question.
