Switching to the other side of the ball; there are several opening jobs available on the Chiefs rosters. Josh Mauga remains sidelined with a calf injury. This opens up the floodgates of who should start in his place. With Mauga missing this practice I’m beginning to wonder if he will be ready week which further extends the opportunities of Justin March and Ramik Wilson.

Currently it seems as though Justin March is making a case for playing time but the game should tell the tale. March has been playing with the starters in practice but showed against the Rams that he doesn’t quite have his assignments down correctly. March’s instincts are very impressive. He has to show that he knows where he is supposed to be consistently in order to make a big contribution to the Chiefs defense.

Perhaps the biggest battle still on the roster is for the corner opposite Marcus Peters. Phillip Gaines is the player that most expect to get the chance to start. He has yet to play in the preseason but is on schedule to play today against the Bears. Other options include Steven Nelson, DJ White and Marcus Cooper.

Nelson has had several opportunities to seize control of the job but has struggled in the games. He is still in the ball game when the Chiefs go to three corners as he will go outside and Gaines will shift inside. The Chiefs will be extremely young at the corner position this season so it will be key that they find the right player to step in and take on the role.
