NFL news: Around the league in 32 plays
By Ben Almquist
The NFL preseason has definitely begun. I don’t say that because of the absurd amount of attention that is put into meaningless games, or because of the huge overreactions that will be coming left and right. Nope, we know the preseason has begun because the injury bug is starting to show up. A ton of big ones early this offseason, including season-enders for some guys that were poised to have big years. NFL news is about to pick up.
So let’s get to it…

Arizona Cardinals: The Cardinals have signed veteran running back Chris Johnson. The running game has been a major concern in Arizona for decades. CJ2K hasn’t really been relevant to the NFL in years, but is (once again) supposedly refocused on reviving his career. However, the Cardinals suffered a major blow when they lost guard Mike Iupati for six to eight weeks due to his knee surgery. The Cardinals have had trouble in the past protecting their quarterbacks, and losing Iupati makes that a major concern again.
- Chiefs’ Take: Kansas City definitely played a role in this signing after holding the Cards to just 75 yards on the ground on a 2.8 yard per carry average.
Buffalo Bills: Starting running back LeSean McCoy will miss at least the rest of the preseason due to a hamstring injury. The Bills do expect to have him back for the start of the season though. However, they have also lost backup running back Karlos Williams for at least the next couple of weeks after an undisclosed surgery. This has led to a rumor that he Bills are having internal discussions about bringing in Ray Rice as a stop-gap. The Bills also signed defensive tackle Red Bryant. The Bills already have a strong defense, but were built more for a 4-3 system than the 3-4 look that Rex Ryan likes to use.

Carolina Panthers: The Panthers may have been dealt a death blow as they have lost Kelvin Benjamin for the year due to a torn ACL. Benjamin had a stud rookie campaign and had a strong connection with quarterback Cam Newton.
