Chiefs vs. Broncos

(week seven, October 1994)

Now, I’ve heard rumors of this game, since I wasn’t around for it myself. However, from what I’ve heard and read about the game, it was epic. The final showdown of Joe Montana and John Elway all wrapped up in a nice Monday Night Football package.

Throughout the enire game, the two teams went at it matching each other touchdown for touchdown. When we find ourselves in the fourth quarter, the score is all tied up 21-21. The Chiefs kicker, Lin Elliot, kicked a short field goal to put them in the lead 24-21 with four minutes remaining in the game.

The Broncos were poised to come from behind and win this game late. Until Shannon Sharpe fumbled the ball on the 40-yard line and gave it back to the Chiefs with 2:45 left to play. However, Marcus Allen fumbled the ball himself the next play of the game and handed it right back to them! I can only imagine the gut-wrenching emotions of my dad as he watched in agony at what was sure to be the crucial mistake that cost us the game as the Broncos drove down the field to score a touchdown and put them up 24-28.

However, with just 1:29 left on the clock, Joe Montana marched the Chiefs downfield leading up to the game-winning Willie Davis touchdown reception to put the Chiefs up 31-28 with just eight seconds left on the clock. Not enough time for Elway to stage one of his infamous comebacks and the Chiefs walked away with the win.
