3. Kelce Is the Gem of the Chiefs’ 2013 Draft

Aug 17, 2014; Charlotte, NC, USA; Kansas City Chiefs tightened Travis Kelce (87) runs the ball as he is pursued by Carolina Panthers safety Robert Lester (38) and linebacker Jason Williams (54) during the second half of the game at Bank of America Stadium. When John Dorsey left Radio City Music Hall a year ago, I was convinced that Kelce and Sanders Commings would be starting within two years.

Apparently, at some point in a past life, the latter took a page from Due Date and spit on a football god’s puppy, because the eternally injured Commings has been granted three snaps in 18 games (excluding the postseason).

Kelce, though? With two games in the rearview, there’s little doubt in my mind that Kelce could take Deebo’s bike.

When healthy, he’s a bearded bulldozer who scoffs at first contact. Calling his number is like walking up to a pinball machine, inserting a quarter and adding a wrecking ball to the mix.

Due to his blocking, Kelce can function as a traditional in-line tight end, but he can also double as a flex option. And though he won’t juke anyone out of their Nikes, he touts deceptive “Rumble, young man, rumble” speed.

Two Sundays into the 2014 season, No. 87 currently finds himself as Pro Football Focus’ (PFF) No. 10 overall tight end.
