The Kansas City Chiefs made Mississippi State defensive tackle Chris Jones their first pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. He may not have officially been a first round pick, but in the minds of many KC fans Jones is the player they got with their first round pick (they just added another pick by sliding down a few spots into the second round).

While a lot of focus has been on the cornerbacks that the Chiefs drafted because of the need at that position it is Jones that remains the most likely rookie to make an impact this coming season. So what should KC fans be expecting from Jones? I watched eight of his games from last season to try and get a good feel for what kind of player the Chiefs landed in Chris Jones.

If you enjoy watching game tape of draft prospects I can’t recommend draftbreakdown.com enough. Their site had six games listed under Jones. I was able to find another there by watching Auburn offensive tackle Shon Coleman’s game against Mississippi State.

Finally, I found one additional game on Youtube. In all I watched his games against LSU, Auburn, Texas A&M, Louisiana Tech, Missouri, Arkansas, Ole Miss, and NC State. I feel like eight games is a big enough sample size to judge a player on and what I saw from Jones was encouraging. There is definitely elite upside there but also a couple of question marks that should be addressed.

Going into the draft I could sum up my knowledge of Chris Jones with the following statement: He is incredibly talented but inconsistent, especially with his motor. I hadn’t watched hardly any film on Jones and was basing that assessment on the scouting reports I had read on him.
