Those scouting reports were often very different in terms of where they had Jones ranked. Here is the summary CBS’s Dane Brugler had on Jones in his 2016 Draft Guide (my favorite guide):

"He offers a terrific blend of size, body control and strength, but is not yet the sum of his parts with inconsistent ball awareness and effort – has plenty of parts in the box, but the instructions are in a foreign language. Jones is still raw in several areas, but it’s easy to see the potential due to his foot quickness and body type. Although he shows first round flashes and will be overdrafted because of those flashes, it comes in spurts and the impact of his body of work doesn’t warrant that high of a selection – will be a part-time player and project early in his career."

Brugler had Jones ranked as his 12th-best defensive tackle and graded him as a third round prospect. However, some experts were much higher on Jones. NDT Scouting’s 2016 Draft Prospectus by Kyle Crabbs had Jones rated as the number one defensive tackle and the 18th-best prospect in the entire draft. Crabbs’ summary of Jones includes the following:

"Chris Jones is an incredibly versatile defender with the ability to line up in a number of positions in any scheme and be a productive and disruptive force along the line of scrimmage. Jones’ combination of length, power, quickness and technique are a rare package and should project easily to the next level. Jones’ skill set likely projects best to a three man front to stack up blocks before shedding and getting out into pursuit…..Jones has had a quiet career in the box score for a majority of his career at Mississippi State but there is tons of disruption and forced plays on the film that should become finished plays as he continues to improve his football intelligence and add further polish to his game."

So which one is Jones? Is he the incredibly talented player that was worthy of a first round pick and just needs a little coaching or is he far too inconsistent in his effort and production to be a top talent in this draft class? After watching eight games of Jones myself I can see where both sides of the argument are coming from.

Let’s talk specifics…
