Your Thoughts on a Rumor

I hesitate to post this because of the nature of the material, but it’s a really, really juicy rumor that discusses a really intriguing possibility. It’s a rumor that comes partly of a questionable source, and partly of a source that I’m assured is very, very reliable.

It involves the Chiefs, the Browns, our #5 overall, the Browns’ #7 overall, and QB Jimmy “Theme From ‘Jaws’” Clausen of Notre Dame.

Strap in.

The rumor I’m hearing that’s coming from a greener, less reputable source:

The Chiefs have been in discussion with Cleveland to swap first round picks. The Chiefs get Cleveland’s 2nd round pick and The Chiefs and Cleveland swap draft slots in the 5th and 6th rounds.

Whats the Chiefs motive? Weiss [sic] wants Claussen [sic] badly. He thinks he’s a 10-15 year NFL QB.

More reliable sources, or at least sources that I’m told are more reliable, are pushing this rumor, along similar lines:

Weis wants Claussen [sic] badly. He thinks he’s the real deal and is working on Pioli and Haley to convince them to make the pick at #5. The Cleveland trade is still on the table. The Chiefs think that Claussen [sic] will still be there at the Cleveland pick.

That sound you’re hearing is the theme from Jaws.

Needless to say, I think this is brilliant, if they manage to pull it off. I’ve even argued for the Chiefs to take Clausen with the #5 overall, so getting him at #7 plus a 2nd rounder would, well, make me do this.

You’ve got to have the quarterback to win.

Now before you or I or anybody gets too excited, keep several things in mind:

  • This is an anonymous rumor, albeit from reportedly reliable sources.
  • Pioli has gone on record saying we are not in the hunt for a QB, smokescreen or not.
  • There’s no guarantee that, if the Chiefs fall to the #7 overall pick, the Seahawks simply wouldn’t take Clausen with the #6.
  • This trade doesn’t seem to benefit the Browns in any particular way that I can see. Why would the Browns trade away their 2nd rounder to us so they can leapfrog Seattle if their intent was to pass on a QB? This has gone unexplained by the rumor.

But you tell me, Addicts. Jimmy Clausen with the #7 overall and an additional 2nd rounder to boot. Do you pull the trigger?

Da-nuh da-nuh da-nuh da-nuh da-nuh REEE REEE REEE…

i would like to say this to scotty! do this with Cleveland and jimmy will pan out in the end and become a hall of fame QB....... yes wearing red and white! me and J.C. are still working on the details but we will have it soon! good luck! i'm routing for you, because i because i kind of have too. peace

hunt OUT!

someone find me some tapes on Casey Clausen

I don't think it's "Weis", to pick up an unproven at pro level and obviously a very expensive guy to sign, when our GM just brought in our QB of the future who really hasn't been given an ample opportunity to show what he can do with an adequate o line and in order to satisy the whim of an OC, who could just take the next head coaching offer he gets and then....poof....he's gone....and wanting to take Jimmy with him. Also, JC's 9" hands, smallest measured hands for a QB at this year's combine, really concern me. It sounds like a lot of fumbles at the NFL level. I think we should go with a sure thing and draft Okung. Stay the course Chiefs fans. Have some faith in Matt, If ya let him stay, he'll do ya proud...I promise ya that.

KCMan

Whoever came up wih this needs to put the crack pipe down!

hey dude you are so right. these guys are stirring things up to sell the website, more people equals more money. Some of these guys might be chiefs fans but they don't know football. And do you know what? i don't care as this is the best fun in the offseason I've had in a long time. so don't take em to seriously and have fun posting.

was this rumor made up in his head? where does this so called source come from? this is a joke i think this person bought into the smoke screen himself and is filling up the page cause there is no news to talk about so he fills he needs to make up lies to make news.

first off the draft value chart in no way shape or form adds up to this trade? you tell me?

secondly, why would they waste that pick on a QB knowing we have to trade partner for cassell lined up? could be one in the making though? since when has pioli taken a QB high? not his style? why is weis having breakfast with QB levi brown from troy if clausen is our guy as this source says?

third, everyone knows seatle has a QB on the radar why else would they work out tim tebow? seriously? but your going to move to 7 to make the pick rather than ahead of seatle? also cleveland is rumored to be looking into a QB also in round 1 so why make that trade with not only 1 person who could snag that guy but 2 teams? doesnt add up this is all false and made up to make news for us to read this is a joke.

Jimmy Clausen might be pretty good but so was David Carr. He had no offensive line and thus not a good career in the NFL. They already spent 60 mill on Matt Cassel. Get him some lineman and the benefit of the doubt for at least one year and quit with Jimmy Clausen that guy is no leader a cocky punk.

HAHA casey clausen is about as likely to get drafted as jimmy clausen. which is to say no chance at all.

Hey crockpot WHO is Casey Clausen?

If our team rep went up to the podium at the 5th pick and handed Goodell a card explaining that, He would fall on the floor and start laughing his ass off. Repeating "Are you kidding me?"

I heard the Chiefs are gonna draft Casey Clausen. This was also from a reliable source.

Why does everyone think that Clausen is a franchise QB? He hasn't played a down in the NFL. At least we know what we have in Cassel. Give him a little time with the same offence for an entire year. I think that we need to worry more about the defense. If I remember right we actualy put up some points at the end of the year but the defense could stop nobody. Go defense first round Please.

If it wasn't for all the dropped passes, and probably the worst o-line in football, I think Cassel would have had a pretty respectable year. Not to mention it being his first year on a new team with a first year coach trying to be head coach and offensive co-ordinator at the same time. We are paying Cassel a mint, and Pioli does not want to look stupid by pulling the plug after only one year. Weiss has not coached a single game for the chiefs yet, he does not run this team. With improved wr's, improved o-line, and another year experience, I think Cassle could put up some decent numbers this year. Lets just focus on improving those key areas before really judging Matt Cassle.

I LOVE the idea of keeping our 1st rounder and trading Cassel for their 2nd rounder. Then we could possibly have a GREAT/Franchise QB instead of just a average or good QB and still have 3 picks in the 2nd round to upgrade our many other holes. That's one of the best scenarios I've heard yet! Thanks Ehud for making my day and Double D I hope that you are wrong.

Yes Scott would look like a fool to do this BUT he did say along with Haley that they will do EVERYTHING and ANYTHING to make this team better and will ALWAYS be looking to be upgrading any position. So if the opportunity arises, I hope they stay true to their word.

"Giving up" on Matt is nuts, he played like a franchise qb all year under the pressure we allow. Anyway I remember 2008 when we rotated qb's it was horrible to watch, this is SO MUCH BETTER.

The Chiefs have declared that Cassel is their starter. If they were to go back on their word it would send a terrible message to the rest of the team.

I feel like a broken record here but Pioli would look like a fool to give up on Cassel already. Haven't we learned that Pioli is not a knee jerk reaction kind of guy? Cassel had a below avaerage season on a below average team. If the team is average this year and Cassel is still below average, i will entertain the idea that the Chiefs need to look elswhere.

Until then, however, Cassel is the guy.

Also, this trade scenario doesn't even make sense. The Browns are activly looking for QB's. The only way they are going to trade up is to get a QB. Why would KC trade back to get Clausen? If Bradford goes #1 and it looks like he will if Schefter is correct, then the only 1st round QB left is Clausen.

Also, I am not sure moving up two spots, from 7 to 5 will get you a 2nd round pick. Maybe a 3rd. None of it makes sense.

Matt Cassel is our Quarterback,he showed a lot of good signs,we just need to protect him and give him lots of time to make his moves.the next thing you know weise will be wanting us to change our colors to green and gold.

Never. Going. To. Happen.

I'd be surprised to see a new arrival push for such a risky move.

I like the trade a lot, though the 5th/6th swap is a little confusing. However, I really hope it has nothing to do with Classen. Cassel is the QB, so load up on picks...and trade down again with Buffalo/Denver/JAX if Claussen is still there. THEN take Williams/McClain/Haden, and then lock and load in the 2nd/3rd rounds.

I like the idea but I don't believe it will happen. I am pretty certan that Lamar Hunt, before he died, had it permanently written into the Chiefs' organizational bylaws that we will never, ever draft a franchise quarterback. Tell me I'm wrong.

I believe that it is possible that Weiss wants Clausen. However, as you pointed out, why is Cleveland doing this and what about Seattle? Also the Chiefs don't pick in the 6th round so they can't trade slots with Cleveland. Unless they mean we give them our 5th rounder for their 6th. It all seems a bit muddled. No way do I think this happens.

Remove the trading of the 1st rounders and perhaps Cleveland's 2nd rounder to us is for Cassel. So we would get Clausen at 5 and Cleveland gets Cassel for their 2nd. Maybe that's what they're talking about. Still don't think it happens, though.

Since we're playing the What If game, let's pretend this trade goes down except Cleveland makes the trade so they can grab Clausen. Here's what I do.

1a) McClain ILB
1b) Pouncey C/G (Traded Cleveland's 2nd and Page to the Cardinals for their first)
1c) Williams NT (Traded our 2nd and 3rd to Cowboys for their 1st and 4th; added bonus in sticking it to the Chargers by taking Williams from them)
2) Chad Jones SS

Ladies and gentlemen, in 2 days of drafting I've gotten the best ILB, NT, and C in the draft along with a starting SS. Ta-da.

I like trading down and getting that extra pick, but would pass on JC at QB.

no, matt cassel is are QB.. he prove he is a good QB with pat's he just need's weapon's and the bad play calling witch is not his fault...he will be a Good QB for K.C. in do time.. the rebuilding process is coming along nice...
