Zachariah Branch looks like the exact receiver the Chiefs always fall for

Love it or hate it, the Chiefs have a type at wide receiver and Zachariah Branch falls right in line.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made something clear with the trade of Trent McDuffie: this offseason is all about change. With a crop of draft picks, including four picks inside the top 100, the Chiefs are poised to remake as much of their roster as they want. Which means both the offense and defense are subject to major overhauls. The Chiefs have a sneaky need at wide receiver with ever-lingering questions around Rashee Rice and little to no information about Jalen Royals.

Most fans are going to want to see the Chiefs go after a larger-framed boundary receiver rather than a smaller speed receiver. Which is exactly why the Chiefs will just take another smaller speed guy. Joking aside, the Chiefs can't help themselves with these guys, and they still had a vision in mind of Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown, and Rashee Rice. Zachariah Branch can bring a similar skill set that the Chiefs were looking for and didn't quite get from Brown.

Additionally, there are still some questions about Worthy's role, too. Is he best as a gadget role player or a vertical deep threat? Zachariah Branch might be the best pure gadget player in the class, and he is constantly open downfield too. However, the Georgia offense just didn't use him in that role. There's a chance Branch can be that movable piece for the Chiefs offense, and Worthy is unlocked more downfield to open things up for Rice and Kelce.

Zachariah Branch's background

Branch was raised in Las Vegas and attended the prestigious Bishop Gorman High School alongside his brother Zion Branch. Zach was a high-level track athlete in high school as well. He was the Nevada Southern 5A Regional champion in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and long jump as a sophomore and ran a 10.33 100-meter dash as a junior. He was a consensus 5-star prospect via 247Sports and the top wide receiver recruit in the nation for the 2023 class.

Growing up a USC fan, he committed to them in 2023, where he played his first two seasons of football, including his freshman year with Caleb Williams. After the 2024 season, he entered the transfer portal and committed to Georgia. Branch finished his three-year college career with 1,634 receiving yards and 9 touchdowns. He also added another 94 rushing yards and a touchdown. He was also a factor in the return game with a punt and kick return touchdown as well.

Assessing Zachariah Branch's strengths

Game Changing Speed

There are some very fast players in this class, but Branch is the best combination of speed and quickness. His short-area quickness and acceleration are among the best in college football, let alone the draft class. It would be foolish to say any player moves like Tyreek Hill, but his stature and acceleration draw some comparisons.

Versatiltiy

Branch has many ways to impact a team. He can be used downfield as a field stretcher. He's surprisingly strong over the middle of the field for his size as a slot weapon. He can be used as a horizontal stretch and screen option and is also an impact returner as well.

Yards After the Catch

Not all fast players are great after the catch (Xavier Worthy), but Branch has terrific acceleration and his ability to cut without changing speed is special. He is creative with angles considering his speed and can break tackles as well.

Acknowledging Zachariah Branch's weaknesses

Usage

Branch was used in a very gadget-heavy role at Georgia. His 3.6 average depth of target ranks dead last among qualified receivers in FBS. The amount of swing passes and bubble screens he catches is flattering. The question is, was that out of necessity for the quarterback play, or is that his limitation?

Size

Branch is 2 inches shorter than Xavier Worthy and only 12 lbs. heavier than him. His body composition is much different than Worthy's—he is denser—but the durability concerns still remain. Also not going to be a factor at the catch point with smaller arms.

Route Running

Not a refined route runner. He frequently rounds off routes and does not have a wide variety of releases to win against press coverage at the line of scrimmage.

Is Zachariah Branch an inevitable Chief?

With the recent release of Tyreek Hill, everyone is making the easy connection of him coming back to the Chiefs. If Kansas City wants to add that type of player alongside Rice and Worthy, Branch makes way more sense. He will be cheaper, younger, healthier, and hopefully less of a headache off the field. Branch's range could be interesting—a Day 2 selection feels likely but he could be there in the third, possibly. If the Chiefs want to add explosiveness to their offense, Branch is certainly an option to consider.

Zachariah Branch is a special athlete with game-changing speed and quickness that makes him a high-level YAC threat. His ability to impact the game on offense and special teams makes him a highly versatile weapon. However, the lack of route running and size will likely limit his production at the NFL level.

Round Grade: Grey Chip (Day 3 pick)
