Former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill is a free agent for the first time in his career. The Miami Dolphins released him while they tear their roster down for a rebuild and now Hill has a chance to choose where he'll play next.
Naturally, the Chiefs are going to be connected to Hill because of their history together. K.C. drafted Hill in the fifth round in 2016 and helped make him one of the best receivers in the league, especially once he was catching passes from Patrick Mahomes.
Hill hasn't been shy about hinting at a return to Kansas City and Tyrann Mathieu, another former Chief, thinks it makes a whole lot of sense for both sides.
"I know a lot of people [are going to] throw his name in a hat... linking back up, you know with Mahomes, which I don't count that out," Mathieu said on his podcast In the Bayou With Tyrann Mathieu. "It's hard to get in trouble in Kansas City. Kansas City is not Miami so maybe that's something he needs... to kind of get back to you know, the Midwest and you know to play for a coach in an organization that [believes in Hill] they you know, you got everything in place for you to to sort of succeed. You know what I mean?... I don't think it's a bad look at all... Given the guys that they have on a roster now... He may be... the person to sort of lift those guys..."
Tyrann Mathieu pushes intriguing Tyreek Hill solution for Chiefs
Mathieu then discussed how Xavier Worthy hasn't become the wide receiver the Chiefs were hoping he would and how the receiver position in general has been disappointing for them in recent years. Mathieu's point was essentially that bringing Hill in as a mentor could do wonders for Worthy as he enters his third year in the pros.
A big reason to be skeptical of Hill is that he's coming off a major injury and, at soon-to-be 32-years-old, that injury is no joke. For a guy who relies on his speed, the injury needs to be a talking point and Mathieu mostly just touched on how that injury would make Hill more affordable for the Chiefs if they wanted to target him.
While connecting Hill to the Chiefs makes sense given their history together and Kansas City's need at the position, the chances of Hill coming back from that injury and being the same player he was before doesn't feel likely. He's also a pretty dramatic guy and gripes when things don't go his way and the Chiefs simply don't need that on their roster.
