For those keeping tabs on familiar faces, the NFL's transaction wire brought the latest news for two former members of the Kansas City Chiefs. It was good news, in fact, given that it gives both tight end Baylor Cupp and linebacker Brandon George new homes, at least for now, with just a couple of weeks left of the NFL preseason.
The Arizona Cardinals signed Cupp to their 90-man roster on Saturday, while the Philadelphia Eagles brought George on board after taking a closer look.
After multiple tryouts this summer, Cupp finally landed a spot to call home, even if it's temporary. The Cardinals just lost tight end Jameson Geers to injured reserve following their most recent preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Geers wasn't a likely candidate for the 53-man roster, so it's not as if there's a clear path ahead of Cupp, but all a player can ask for is an opportunity.
Cupp signed with the Chiefs as a rookie free agent out of Baylor in 2024 and stuck around for a full year. He spent most of the season on the practice squad, but he was activated for a close Week 14 win over the Los Angeles Chargers and earned a handful of reps in that game on both offense and special teams. The following spring, the Chiefs signed Jake Briningstool and Tre Watson as priority free agents and gave Cupp the pink slip.
As for George, he signed with the Chiefs last year after going unselected in the 2025 NFL Draft. The former Pitt linebacker came with an incredible athletic profile but ended up being outplayed by another undrafted linebacker in Cooper McDonald. George stuck around on the practice squad, while McDonald earned an active roster spot, and the Chiefs released George last May after drafting an entire new crop of rookies.
For both players, the chance to get to know a new coaching staff is at least a way to stay relevant and generate more film in case things don't work out with their new teams. And both will have a couple of preseason games still ahead of them to showcase their skills.
