As it turns out, Kansas City Chiefs fans had no real reason to worry about Travis Kelce's future. The tight end admits he basically knew he was returning all along.

Kelce ended a disappointing six-win season by saying he was going to need some time to consider his playing future after watching the Chiefs' run of dominance end in miserable fashion in '25. It made sense at the time, considering the future Hall of Famer was getting into his late-thirties with several career records already claimed.

According to Kelce, however, he didn't need as much time as it looked like he was taking. And Kelce says that those in charge at Arrowhead were well aware. A recent appearance on the Pat McAfee Show allowed the Chiefs' tight end to explain his process to return for a 14th year.

“I’m not gonna lie. It was pretty short and brief," said Kelce when asked about the time required to make his decision. "The Chiefs knew where I was the entire time on it.

Travis Kelce spoke about his decision to return for a 14th season and getting motivation from Taylor Swift in his latest interview.

"You always need to take a step back. You always need to take a step back, breathe, let the emotions of the season settle down and see where the body is and things like that. But man, I’m still in love with this game. I still love going to work, putting on the pads, grinding it out, and playing the game.

"I think my best opportunity was playing for the Chiefs yet again and running this back with Pat Mahomes and Coach Reid. I got my guy Coach Bieniemy back. There’s a lot of pieces in Kansas City that I absolutely love, and I can’t wait to get back in the building with them.”

Kelce admitted that he's drinking Garage Beers at this point in the offseason, and that he needs to get back in the gym soon. But he also explained that motivation is not an issue for anyone on the Chiefs' roster after suffering a nine-game skid from their 15-win total in 2024.

"I think the biggest thing coming back was that we’ve gotta be even hungrier than we’ve been before. Talking to Pat, talking to Coach Reid and the guys, there’s a lot of dawg mentality to get this thing fixed. That mentality itself is already kind of motivating me to get to where I need to be during the season."

McAfee went on to ask Kelce about his relationship with superstar songwriter and performer Taylor Swift. Specifically, he wanted to know whether her continued dedication to her craft, even after achieving global success, pushes him to do the same in his field. Kelce answered with an "absolutely!"

“We share the same love for what we do, and fortunately, we’ve had this desire since we were kids in our selected professions," said Kelce. "It’s amazing to see her keep going to the table, keep finding new things to write about, keep finding new melodies and things like that. On top of that, still seeing her have that love and joy in what she does. Of course, that’s motivating. That’s motivating for anybody, let alone my fiancee and knowing that I’m going through something where I’m trying to figure out exactly what the future holds for me. Something like that definitely motivates me to say, ‘I’m not done either. I’ve still got some ideas in the back of my mind, still got some juice left to play this game.’"

The fact that the Chiefs went home before the postseason began has lowered expectations across the board for NFL analysts going forward. Kelce says the team is aware of what others are saying about them and that he's excited to prove them wrong.

"We’re seeing what the world is doing right now. We’re seeing how everybody’s reacting. But we know we’ve got the nucleus in Kansas City. We’ve got some big hitters in Kansas City. And we’ve got Coach Reid. So we’re never out of this thing, but we know the division’s getting pretty competitive across the board. That’s only going to make it for us to get better throughout the season and be the best team we can be at the end of it. But we hear it all. though. We hear it all, though."
